Article #3

Dear MS Cabbie,

I'm currently in eighth grade and I'm scared out of my mind about going to high school. I'm only going to Cab High so it's not much of a change, but I'm just afraid of growing up. I'll soon be eating lunch with high schoolers and I think that I'll be too over whelmed. All this career path and high school course stuff is making me think too much about my future that I'm not ready for yet, too. I know that I have to think of my future, but I just get freaked out. How do I become comfortable with the fact that I'm growing up and I can't stop it?
-I feel like Peter Pan

Dear Feels like Peter Pan,

Growing up can be a scary thing but it will happen sooner or later. I can understand why you are scared, It is a lot of change no matter where you go. Even if it is the same school it can be scary. Your no loner the oldest in the school, your back down at the bottom of the food chain.

Picking courses and career paths is scary when you in 8th grade. You might want to change what you want to do in a year. Until you know what you want to do for the rest of your life try classes that interest you. If you do what you like you will be happy with whatever you do in your life. Its crazy they make you consider what you want to do in life when your only in 8th grade, You have plenty of time to worry about that sort of stuff later.

I don't really think I can give you advice on growing up, It just happens. You have to make yourself feel comfortable in your self and growing up because it will happen no matter how much you don't want it to.

Don't worry too much about the future yet, Change is always scary but you will be fine, Life will go on and somewhere along the way you will grow up. Good luck in high school!

4th Marking Period

Dear MS Cabby,

I've been so addicted to this one game on the Internet. My mother has told me to stop so many times, but I don't listen. I've gotten to the point where I'm getting a maximum of 4 or 5 hours of sleep at night since I have to stay up longer to finish homework. It has definitely had a huge effect on school. I'm starting to get in trouble because I'm falling asleep in class. I'm getting bad grades because of my lack of sleep. I'm also forever daydreaming about playing it. How do I break away from the game?

-Way too addicted

Dear Way too addicted,

You really need to cut this addiction of playing games on the Internet. It is clearly wasting your time and effecting your school work. The sooner you stop playing the better! Ways you could stop playing are focous more on your school work. That way your grades will improve because you will have less time to play the video game.

You say you are losing sleep due to this addicting video game. A normal person should get approximatly 8 hours of sleep every night. If I was you I would start setting limits for myself. Try to slowly cut down the time you play on the computer. If you play three hours everynight try taking 15 minutes off the playing time everynight. Continue to do this until you are happy with the time you are spending on the computer. You will start to spend more time trying to find something else to do, In this case you might even have more time to sleep.

Daydreaming about an online game is extreme if you ask me, This game has clearly taken a large affect on your life. The sooner you set limits for your self the better. Find a hobby other then playing your video games. You could try a sport or a club at school that will help take up your time.

Dear MS Cabby Marking Period 4

Dear MS Cabby,
I am failing math right now. I think if I keep my ways up I might actually fail the marking period and I don’t want that to happen because my parents would flip. I don’t want to go to summer school or something, so please, can you help me find ways to improve my grade?
-Sucks in math.

Dear Sucks in Math

Math can be difficult. Trust me flunking won't be a problem if you change your ways. There is still a lot of marking period left so you have plenty of time to bring up your grade. If you need some motivation think about failing math and ending up in summer school, not a very fun place when you could be enjoying your summer at the beach.
To start off make sure you do all of your homework. Homework is often the key that will make or break your grade. Also, the assignments will give you practice so you know what your doing. Doing your homework the right way will make it easier to see what you are having problems with. It will give you more of an opportunity to ask your teacher a specific question about the lesson. Also, there is typically a marking period project which means that it can help your grade a lot.
Then once you do your homework and you still need to bring your grade up try studying. Find some extra problems in you text book or on-line. Once you are finished with the problems have someone that knows about what your doing in math check them. Someone you could get to help is a parent or teacher. Maybe try finding a study buddy, a person that is really good in math can help you a lot. If you don't have time for a study buddy then try taking extra notes in class. Taking a lot of notes will make it easier to look back and see how to solve an equation.
Do you now see that you have a ton of options, that way you won't end up in summer school. Just remember to do all of your homework, study, and make sure you are doing the problems the right way. Good luck in math, I'm sure you will do just fine.

Burger King Review
By: Alexis Hazelton

In this world you either love or hate fast food. Everyone has had fast food before, whether it’s from McDonalds, Taco Bell, or even Burger King. The franchise Burger King has been open for business since 1954. Even though the economy is slipping Burger king is still bringing in profits and remains successful. Burger King is great for every meal and snack craving. There is so much to love about this fast food place but there is also a few things to dislike.
Burger King is a fairly easy and fast food restaurant. Prices are very reasonable. Burger Kings gives it costumers a large variety of burgers, sides, chicken nuggets, sandwiches, and various other tasty foods. Is it hard to believe that I have never had a burger from the best place to get a burger? I always get my favorites from this place. For lunch or Dinner I would recommend the chicken nuggets with either onion rings or French fries. For a morning meals get the mini cinnamon rolls.
Now, as hard as is to believe there are some disappointing things about Burger King. Every time I have been in my local Burger King it is a mess. The tables can sometimes be filled with used napkins and straw wrappers. I’m often afraid to use the bathrooms there. Now, that is not all that makes me unhappy. I honestly do no like Burger Kings apple fries. I feel that they are a rip of French fries. Now, just imagine this; you are a little kid, you told one of your parents you wanted French fries and they get you the healthy apple fries. Why should a fast food place give out healthy foods? To me that is unethical. Then there are the workers who never pay attention to specific orders. You ask for a simple burger with out the cheese and what do they do? Give you cheese.
Now, think twice next time you arrive at Burger King and ask for a burger. I would check your order before you leave and I would not suggest even trying to find a table. Get your food and run. Over all I would give this fast food franchise a C-. There are better places and more family oriented places. So, enjoy your next eating experience.

Dear MS Cabby Marking Period 3

Dear MS Cabby,It's the third marking period and we have a lot of breaks. I find when those breaks end it's harder to go to school afterwards. I usually can't concentrate for a few days afterwards and my grades drop slightly. I don't want that to happen. What can I do?
Signed,
Lots of Breaks

Dear Lots of Breaks,
This is a problem for a lot of kids, I know when I get back from a long break all I want to do is nap. There are several ways you can work over your many winter breaks. For one you can bring some of your books home over the breaks. When you have a little extra time look at the notes you have. Maybe bring them in the long car rides, or on plane trips. Before brake starts see what your friends will be up to, maybe you all could have a study party. Being able to study with your friends will be a lot of fun!
Now there are also things you can ask your teacher about. You can see if there is any possible extra credit you can do over your vacation. The extra credit could help you a lot. You can explain how you are distracted after a long break and your teacher will most likely understand and be willing to give you some extra work.
